Reading Workshop is utilized in our class. We read novels that we choose and that expose us to many genres. Students are expected to read in all content areas. We will work whole class, small groups, individually, and in book clubs. We integrate writing and technology into all aspects of our work. Students will be learning independently, from one another and with me. Being able to collaborate with classmates in a productive and respectful manner is key to doing well in my class. Grouping is flexible! Vocabulary development is critical to academic growth. Students will need to work independently to improve in word attack skills, affixes, and common roots. We will be working on learning and applying academic vocabulary also known as "Tier 2 words." There are fifty-five words that are considered critical to academic success especially in a college readiness track of academia. Some of the words follow here: compare, contrast, describe, distinguish, identify, retell, demonstrate, determine, draw, explain, locate, suggest, support, comprehend, develop, organize, refer, connections, details, alliteration, theme, central theme, main idea, point of view, illustrations, stanza, summarize For more information see the following link http://www.marileesprenger.com/the-critical-words.html We will work on using Greek and Latin roots as well as affixes to improve our comprehension and spelling.
